When is the Best Time to Publish a Post?

In CategoryBlogging Tips, Online Marketing
Byadmin

By Ruth Maude, a freelance Web site Designer based in Toronto

If you are like me you are anxious to hit the publish button as soon as your carefully crafted post is finished.  Last Sunday evening while my sons kept calling, “Hey mom, you coming? You’re missing the game.”  I finished up a post.  Now I know that Sunday evening during the Super Bowl isn’t a good time to publish a post so I started to ask myself, when is a good time? Other bloggers say that there isn’t a universal “right” answer to this question.  My feeling is that for the most part the WHEN doesn’t matter.

That said here are a few points to consider before you hit the publish button to ensure that you publish when you can get people to pay attention to your post.

  1. If there is some big news item happening, such as the Super bowl or an Olympic Gold Medal hockey game, you should probably schedule your post for a later date/time.
  2. Avoid publishing on big holidays when web readership is down unless your post is holiday related.
  3. Maybe it doesn’t matter at all when you publish your post as long as you tweet strategically – If your post is about the latest buzz on the web then get it out there fast and promote it with twitter. If the post is sufficiently “buzz-worthy” then others may pick up the Retweets and Retweet again.  If your post is not about the latest buzz and that buzz is dominating the social media highway then you should wait till things quiet down before you tweet it.

I’ve read what has been said on this subject by bloggers who are much bigger than little ‘ol me; Lorelle on WordPress and Darren Rowse of ProBlogger.  They are writing from a ”big-time blogger” perspective.  These larger blogs stick closely to a publishing schedule and their audience knows when the posts are due to arrive. They say that you should know your audience and focus on the time zone that represents them. Business blogs tend to publish in the morning EST.  I’m not convinced that it matters. Faithful subscribers of the well-established blogs won’t care when the post is published, they will read the post in their feed reader when they are ready and pickup on posts they missed.

What about us little guys? For small-time bloggers that don’t have a RSS subscriber following, it doesn’t matter when we post.  It is the social media mentions that will bring traffic to our posts.  I’ve tried to watch how posts at different times of the day and different days of the week do, both in terms of traffic and reactions (comments/retweets/trackbacks). When doesn’t seem to matter as much as what the topic is;  my SEO posts get more reactions then do my WordPress lessons.

What is my blogging goal?  Am I blogging to get a loyal following and become a Social Media or WordPress Guru? Do I want a lot of comments and traffic? My blogging purpose is to provide a resource for my clients.   I love it when a new client tells me they are choosing me because when they read my blog they feel I am knowledgeable about SEO. I want to be able to point my client to a WordPress post that answers their questions.  Yes, I would like to build a reputation in my field but I’m happy to be serving my clients here in Toronto and not worry about who in the world is reading my blog.

Should I have a Blogging Schedule?  Probably, but in reality I can’t maintain one.  I’m not a full-time blogger and I don’t have a blogging team.  I can only devote so much time to writing posts.  Blogging isn’t what pays the bills around here. Often I’m blogging in response to a client’s question and I want to get the post up for them straight away so they can review what we’ve already discussed.  I don’t want to just blog for blogging’s sake.  I only post when I have something I feel is worth saying and I don’t want to put undo pressure on myself to meet arbitrary blogging deadlines. When I write a post and I don’t have a reason to publish it right away, I will schedule the post.  I will choose a time for early morning and a couple of days away from my last post and I avoid weekends. In this way I might be teetering on the brink of a schedule.   I agree that it is ideal to pick a regular time/day to post and to try to stick to the schedule if you can do it.

Why don’t I get more comments? For me I think the answer isn’t connected to when I post but who is my audience.  My blog has a lot of posts that are for newbies.  My audience isn’t the commenting kind. They are, for the most part, shy about using all these “New Media” tools and reluctant to add a comment; they haven’t yet learned about the benefits of commenting.

Grab your 5 minutes of fame and extend it: After you publish your post you want to promote it with social media.  Tweet your post to your followers using  http://bit.ly/ a url shortener service that also tracks the number of clicks your link receives. Some of your posts may also do well on social bookmarking sites like Digg or StumbleUpon.   Add a comment on a related posts on another blog if by doing so you are adding value the discussion there and you can direct readers to your related post.  Cross-promote your posts from within your own blog by internal linking and adding a related post plugin.

What do you think?  Is there a “best” time for you to publish your posts?

Commenting – Why and How to Comment on a blog post

In CategoryBlogging Tips, Online Marketing, Wordpress Tools and Tips
Byadmin

I have noticed that only a small number of people who visit blogs actually comment so I went searching for some info on the importance and how it can help you in your marketing efforts This blogpost found at http://www.dandelionwebdesign.com says it all!

Enjoy!

“New Media” is changing the way that marketers and advertisers reach their target audiences and it changes the way that we interact online. New Media is “social”: social networking, social bookmarking, social news, blogging, wikis… In this new social age communicating with consumers has suddenly become a two-way street. It’s about people talking; it’s all about conversation.

New media’s use of commenting does something that the traditional media can’t do very well; allow users to provide feedback openly, publicly and in real time. Let’s face it, a letter to the editor just isn’t immediate enough for us any more now that we can post a comment.

There are good reasons why you should start commenting on the blogs you read; here are some of them.

Reasons you should Comment:

  1. Links that drive traffic to your site: Commenting on other blogs allows you to post a link back to your site.  This can drive related traffic back to your blog/website.
  2. Build Personal/Brand Credibility: You can build credibilty for your name as an industry leader.  People will start to pay attention to your tweets on twitter,  your blog posts, and  the comment you post on blogs as you create a name for yourself, as you become known in your niche area as an expert.
  3. Give Feedback: Commenting allows you to give feedback to another blogger. When you find a blog post helpful, thank the author. It’s just a nice thing to do.
  4. Join in the conversation.  Add value to what the blogger has said and future post readers will benefit from your comment.

Blogging Comment Protocol:

We’ve looked at the why now let’s look at some widely accepted blogging commenting how to’s.

When writing your own blog posts:

  1. When you write a blog post end your post by inviting comments.  Ask a question that will encourage their response.
  2. When someone comments, return the favour.  Follow the link back to their site, check out what they have been blogging about and add a comment on a post that interests you.
  3. When you write a post acknowledge the inspiration for your post, and link back to the original author.  I read “5 reasons why you should comment on blog posts” when I wrote this.  It is common practice to read other blogger’s posts on the same topic when you are writing your posts, be sure to give credit where it is due. When the original author receives a trackback or a pingback (notification from the blogging system that you have linked to them) they will check you out and hopefully comment thanking you for the link.
  4. When someone trackbacks or pings linking to your blog post, check out their post and comment thanking them.
  5. You can moderate your visitors’ comments via the Comments menu in the wp-admin backend. When you moderate a comment you can fix typos but be sure not to change the intent of the remarks.
  6. You have a number of options that you can set to control Comments appearing on your WordPress blog.  These are adjusted in the wp-admin under > Settings > Discussion.

When commenting on someone else’s blog:

  1. Make sure that your comments add value to the post and to join in the discussion in a positive and constructive way.  This will make the blogger more likely to read and comment on your blog in return.  If you make a good point you will give their readers a reason to check out your blog as well.
  2. Respect other commenters.  Bloggers don’t want their blog to be hijacked by rude comments and their fallout.
  3. Show your face… Get a gravatar so that when you comment on a blog your own image shows beside your comment. Gravatars are great to build your brand presence.

Now the next time you read a blog, try and comment, go ahead, you can start by leaving a comment here for me!

It’s Tip Tuesday…How Many E-mails Should You Send When Launching?

In CategoryBlogging Tips, Marketing Tips, Programs and Workshops
Byadmin

Knowing how many e-mails to send off when you are launching a program or new product. You either have people saying there are too many or not enough. There’s a technique known as a “launch” that has proven to sell more copies of a product than any other marketing system we have but it does involve a high number of e-mails.

One of my favourite internet gurus, Yaro Starak – I just love this guys knowledge and enthusiasm sent his out this morning.

I hope one day you go through the experience of  launching your own product too, so you will know
what it’s like to be on the end sending out  messages (and make all that money too!).

It’s a tough balance to get right, because you  need to both ask people to buy what you have to
sell, and provide value so they don’t unsubscribe.

Some people will unsubscribe no matter what, but  that’s okay, they’re not into what you do
anyway, so you don’t need them.

As a blogger, right now you are building an audience and attempting to foster relationships
with a small group who will one day become your  customers.

This is the NUMBER ONE objective you should always have in mind whenever you create content for your
people.

Give your hardcore fans what they want. Help them do what they come to you to learn how to do, and
they will love you for it.

When it becomes time to sell your product, you will have built up trust and established a solid
line of communication with your hardcore fans, so making sales will be easy.

This is why it’s so vital that you keep in mind the big picture as you build your online business.

1. Create a blog that offers real value and give people what they want so they love you for it.

2. Foster an email list that brings people into a targeted funnel and offers even more value.

3. Launch a product that helps your most responsive subscribers, who buy what you have so
you make lots of money in the process.

This is all it takes to create a six figure business online.

See, I told you he knows his stuff!

If you like the sound of that and you want the process explained to you in more detail, then you
should take his Membership Site Mastermind program! For the next 24 hours there are some amazing bonuses too!

Don’t Let Your Blog Commentors be Faceless!

In CategoryBlogging Tips, Marketing Tips, Online Marketing, Wordpress Tools and Tips

Gvatars are Globally Recognized Avatars. An avatar or gravatar is an icon, or representation, of a user in a shared virtual reality, such as a forum, chat, website, blog or any other form of online community in which the user(s) wish to have something to distinguish themselves from other users. Created by Tom Werner, gravatars make it possible for a person to have one avatar across the entire web. Avatars are usually an 80px by 80px image that the user will create themselves.

A Gravatar is essentially the same thing, but they are all hosted on a single server and are called up by encrypting the users’ email address via the MD5 algorithm. So instead of having one avatar on one forum you visit, and another at a blog you visit, you could have the same avatar at all the sites you visit that have gravatar function.

Using Gravatars

Setting up Gravatars on your site is easy; you don’t even need an account! Plugins are available for leading blog software and content management systems, and our tutorials will have you running Gravatars in no time.

Gravatars can easily be used within WordPress with the Gravatar WordPress Plugin.

As of WordPress 2.5, Gravatars are built-in and require no additional Plugins for basic usage and management. WordPress users can easily control their Gravatar usage in the Settings > Discussion Administration Panel.

If you need it, the Wordpress Plugin can be downloaded here.

Why not go the extra step and give your visitors the chance to sign up for one before they comment on your blog? GET PLUGIN

If you do not have a Gravatar for yourself sign up here!

Capture Your Website or Blog Visitors a Second Chance!

In CategoryBlogging Tips, Marketing Tips, Website Tips
Byadmin

If you want to give your website visitors a second chance before they leave your site, or offer a special offer (and get them to join your list of course!) I have the answer!

I’ve come across a BRILLIANTLY SIMPLE way to add that kind of urgent responsiveness to your
site, no matter what you’re selling!

It’s called Exit Offer Generator.

But usually, last-minute deals like those were just for big e-commerce sites with huge databases of customers. If you wanted to do it yourself, you’d have to pay a programmer a good chunk of change to add that sort of functionality to your site.

In just three easy steps, you can create a tantalizing offer that will get your customer’s to stop “waiting” for a better deal or going elsewhere to comparison shop – even if they’ve already left your site!

Exit Offer Generator STOPS them in their tracks and guides them effortlessly back to your site – giving you the chance to seal the deal!

What’s more, Exit Offer Generator works with any kind of website, including Wordpress, Blogger and regular HTML websites. Just tell Exit Offer Generator where and when you want your offer to display, copy and paste the code it gives you and you’re done!

If you’ve been looking for that “magic bullet” that will turn more visitors into buyers – this is one piece of software you’ll want to try right away.

This tool is simply amazing and so easy to use. See my exit offer here…it really did only take me a few minutes! After you check out how things work and would like to order you can do so here!

If you want help making this work for you book some time to chat on my online calendar top left!
