Entrepreneurs who work at home are confronted with a whole set of challenges that other working people don’t have –  your four year old interrupts you with “Where’s my toy?”; the laundry and sink of dirty dishes stare you in the face; a stack of magazines you want to read or a TV program you want to watch tempts you…

But if you want to move your business forward and successfully juggle your responsibilities, you have to learn survival skills. Here are two common challenges we face and some suggestions on how to cope with them.

Challenge – Interruptions from children, relatives, and friends
•    Schedule your work hours while the children are asleep.
•    Hire a nanny to care for the children during work hours, and get dad to watch them in the evening work hours.
•    Have a separate work area so you can either shut the door or teach people that when you’re in your separate work area you’re not to be disturbed.
•    When people call to chat, kindly but firmly remind them you’re working and will call them back when your work day is finished.
•    Make sure they know your work hours.

Challenge – Distractions of personal or household business
•    Remove all non-work related items from your separated work area.
•    When ideas come up, jot them down on sticky notes to do later, and keep focused on your work project.
•    Make a commitment to your work hours and stick to it.

How does a guru become a guru?  (Sorry if you dislike
that word, but hang with me a moment so I can make my point.)

EVERY single Internet Marketing “guru” or expert becomes one after creating their own info product, whether it’s a small report, a full ebook, an audio
course, or multi-media with video.

Can you name ONE guru (or internet marketing expert) who does NOT have an info product? I’ll bet you can’t.

I couldn’t.

Now, I’m not going to lie to you and say that every person who creates an info product becomes a guru, but it is pretty much a requirement to making serious income online.

Yes, a list is important. And, so is traffic. And, yes, affiliate marketing is a great way to make money, too…

BUT – if you have an info product, then those other items become much easier.

Having your own info product turns you into a traffic magnet and you begin to attract the things that you are currently looking for. When you have a product, and an affiliate program, other people will begin to promote you.

It’s the key, really, in my opinion, to going from blogger & affiliate marketer to a stable business.

I love blogging and I wouldn’t knock it, but honestly, profiting from your own info products can be so much less work.

There are only two steps:
You create the product.
You promote it.

Of course, you can make that as involved as you want. But, there isn’t the daily effort that comes with blogging.

My new ballerina flats were ruined, sopping wet…and I was ankle deep in puddle after puddle as we sloshed through the streets trying to hail a taxi.

Freezing cold because I dressed for spring and resigned to the fact that my hair was going to be matted against my head all day…I was still having fun and making memories with my buddies.

(Oh! Wait…let me back up and fill you in on a few details!)

I was at a conference in Washington DC this past week. It’s an excellent event and I have a lot of great connections, clients, associates, and friends there. Including 2 of my very best friends.

However….I got an idea! (Dangerous, I know)

“Hey! While we’re ’so close’ to New York…why don’t we jump on a train and spend Saturday in the city? We can shop, find a cool restaurant, and then catch a matinee on Broadway?”

They agreed. Wahoooo! We made our plans and it was going to be EASY!

Fast forward to leaving the hotel for the train at 5:30 a.m. (It’s still dark then, in case you are unaware.)

Jump off the train 3 hours later, breakfast at this great little place called Bubby’s. We laughed at how expensive it was –but were still having a great time.

As we ate, I was hoping the rain was going to let up…

Because…

I don’t like to get wet (unless I’m showering or swimming.)

I truly believed my momma when I was younger and she said ’stay dry, you know sugar melts!’

But we ventured back out into the torrential rain and spent the day shopping a bit (for warmer jackets), exploring at Toys R Us and the M&M store (such a great lesson in powerful branding) and then grabbing our seats for “Wicked” at the Gershwyn Theatre.

Our seats weren’t where we were told they were, the concession stand only took cash, the people in front of me were taller than Shaquille O’Neil and it was STILL an amazing show!

Now…lest you think we’re just being great sports about the rain…(it gets better!) …

As we left the theatre for the airport for some of us and train for others…the REAL trials began.

New York virtually shut down. (I am not exaggerating)

* All flights – cancelled.
* All trains – delayed (indefinitely).
* Rental cars – in short supply.
* Private drivers – unavailable.

It was a bit…ummmm FRAZZLING! One friend needed to get back home to lead worship in church the next morning then leave on family spring break. The rest of us had all of our luggage in DC and had connecting flights the next day to get home to our families for spring break trips too. (It was complicated)

However…my friends and I were still being flexible.

Make no mistake. We were miserably cold and wet. We were very inconvenienced and some of our options were a little expensive.

But guess what? We banded together, brainstormed good solutions, and kept our eyes on the ultimate goals.

We had plenty of obstacles, frustrations, and road blocks. MOST of them were out of our control! However, we are ‘find a way’ and ‘make a way’ folks and we stayed positive and clung to the hope that we could make something work!

It reminded me of my business (and yours) in SO many ways!!

When I am clear about my Plan and my Purpose…the obstacles are not nearly as overwhelming. As a matter of fact…I was getting back to DC last night  NO MATTER WHAT! (and I did, at 4 a.m.)

In your business…until you are ROCK SOLID certain WHY you are pursuing the goals and dreams you have set….then every obstacle will seem insurmountable. Every roadblock will make you question your commitment. Every bump in the road will challenge you.

On my call this last week, I talked about being CLEAR on:

* Your Plan
* Your Path
* Your Purpose, and
* Your Process.

That can be challenging, I know. But when you have clarity on the ‘end result’ – then the rain, the wind, the trains, planes and delays cannot get between you and your dreams.

You will be unstoppable.
